My Profile

About Resmi Prakash

I am a linguist, researcher, writer, storyteller, and environmental humanist — not necessarily in that order. With a PhD in Linguistics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, my academic journey began by exploring caste and language dynamics within contact language migration contexts. Over time, my focus has shifted toward the preservation of cultural and linguistic diversity, particularly through documenting untranslatable words from endangered languages of Northeast India — a project that lives and evolves on a public digital platform.

Green Adventure

Beyond academia, I lead educational initiatives for underprivileged students through a non-governmental organisation, designing and implementing alternative, inclusive learning models rooted in empathy, environmental literacy, and storytelling.

My writing, often published in the Sunday Magazine of The Hindu, blends personal narrative with critical social reflection. These essays serve as a bridge between rigorous research and everyday experience, aiming to make complex ideas accessible and emotionally resonant.

This space is where all of it comes together — language, learning, lived experience, and the quiet beauty of words that resist easy translation.

My Research

My core research has revolved around language and education, but my curiosity extends to all facets of society. My PhD explored how caste influenced the evolution of a contact-induced  language spoken by migrants who moved from Goa to Kerala during the Portuguese religious occupation. This intersection of language, identity, and power continues to deeply inform my work.

Further, I’ve been passionately engaged with the endangered and minority languages of Northeast India, an ongoing project that’s very close to my heart.

My research aptitude has also directly shaped my approach to the education projects I have implemented. Drawing from field insights and academic frameworks, I have designed and implemented education projects for underserved students, focusing on identifying overlooked needs and systemic gaps in pursuit of educational justice.
